Clare’s whimsical naive style gives personality, emotion and character to many commission subjects such as pets, farms, homes, gardens and businesses. She has also written and illustrated many stories, and she can illustrate and/or write your own personal story.
She has frequently been called on for her expressive and colourful boat and architecture subjects. Clare is interested in learning abut the emotions or character behind each subject, learning about why the subject is important, and expressing that in each commission. That is why she paints almost exclusively on location. The average price of a commission varies from $125 to $900 depending on the size.
"The Ocean Mistress"
Bob Carpenter is the owner of the Ocean Mistress fishing vessel in Nanaimo, and he commissioned a family portrait and boat painting in 2000. He also wanted the view of Departure Bay where he lived in the background, so first I went to his home and painted the view from their yard. Then I went down to the wharves and painted the entire boat from life. Bob lent me some family photos and discussed where to put everyone in his family and that is how we did it. This painting is actually 48×36 inches, which is larger than usual. I would charge $1500 for such a size and job today. The family has since ordered more work and we all enjoy the interactive component of creating such personal works of art.
